Requirements
 
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have not reached their 45th birthday. Applicants must be subject to a background investigation and interview, prior to appointment. All applicants must be able to read and write the English language. All applicants must be eligible to licensing by the Texas Commission in Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education, See the Eligibility list below:
 
 
ü  Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen
 
 
ü  Applicant must have a High School Diploma or GED
 
 
ü  Under 21 years of age Applicants must have an Associates Degree or 60 semester credit hours from an accredited college, or 24 months of active military experience with an honorable discharge.
 
 
ü  No conviction, probation, deferred adjudication, or court ordered community service for a Class B, in the last ten (10) years.
 
 
ü  No Class “A” or felony conviction(s)
 
 
ü  No family violence conviction(s)

ü Seniority Steps:

6 years ($1,200 annually)

ü Assignment Pay: ($2,080 annually)

 

ü Night Differential:

$1.00 an hour Extra.

 

ü SWAT Pay:

($650 annually)

 

ü Holiday Pay:

Paid at time and one-half for 10 eligible holidays. Paid on December 1st of each year.

 

ü Annual Incentive Certificate Pay: (TCLEOSE)

$1440 for Intermediate

$2100 for Advanced

$2700 for Master

 

ü Vacation Leave (Days):

1-7 years = 15 per year

8-11 years = 18 per year

12-15 years = 19 per year

16-20+ years = 20 per year

 

ü Funeral Leave: 5 days.

 

ü Sick Leave:

15 days annually. Any officer completing a calendar year who has not used sick leave shall be credited with two (2) additional vacation days.

 

ü Health Care Benefits: $15.00 per month employee contribution for single coverage. Family Plan coverage $115.00 per month.

 

ü Texas Municipal Retirement System: 7% of gross earnings withheld and matched by the city 2 to 1.

 

ü Life Insurance: $10,000 City of Brownsville life insurance policy, as well as a Texas Municipal Retirement System policy equivalent to 1 year salary (tax free).

 

ü Tuition Reimbursement: Reimbursement by the city for books and tuition for each successfully completed course from an accredited college or university on a pro-rated basis. $20,000 cap for the department.

 

ü Longevity:

$4.00 monthly for every year of service in the department, not to exceed 25 years.

 

ü Clothing Allowance: $60.00 quarterly for uniformed patrol officers. Investigators receive $200.00 quarterly.
